Get ready to web-swing back into action as Spider-Man makes a return to clean up the streets of New York in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game. It is up to you to find and catch a mysterious murderer going around killing thugs, murderers and other criminals only leaving initials at the crime scene ‘CK” who people are calling the Carnage Killer. Will Spider-Man have to team up with someone to catch this Carnage Killer or can he do it by himself?
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2 you start off playing as Peter Parker in a flashback scene from the first Amazing Spider-Man film. You then hear a loud gun-shot and as you run to the scene you soon discover that your Uncle Ben has been shot and killed. Two years have since passed and you are Spider-Man searching for your Uncle Ben’s killer and you soon discover that the Carnage Killer has struck again. Now, your search intensifies as you hunt down the Carnage Killer.
Even though it is called The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game it isn’t exactly based off the film but at the same time does share some similar events that happened in the movie which was a little confusing. For the first time also you are able to play and walk around as Peter Parker and you must talk to particular characters, investigate and gather information to help you track The Carnage Killer.
After completing the short campaign in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game you can also play a few different types of side missions around the city. These side missions range from saving hostages from danger, stopping car chases, beating up a number of thugs and a few other objectives. By completing these side missions, you earn respect from the people of New York and the police turn a blind eye in making you a top priority, but if you do not complete side missions once in a while your reputation drops down to the point where police actually start attacking you!
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also has collectable comic books hidden throughout the city much like the original title. After collecting these comic book pages you can unlock and read these issues of the real Spider-Man comic books in the Comic Book store which is ran by Stan Lee himself! Throughout the game you can also unlock player model figurines that can also be viewed in Stan Lee’s shop.
Also in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game you can actually level up your different Spider-Man suits you have collected which can have different types of stat’s and abilities, you also earn certain XP points that can be used to purchase other abilities and upgrades to enhance your web shooting powers.
Audio and Visuals
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game visuals were fairly average and were not that much of a step up from the original title at all. Personally I didn’t like the fact that the game is based on The Amazing Spider-Man movie, and Peter Parker didn’t look anything like Andrew Garfield what so ever! What I did like about when it came to audio was they used Sam Riegel as the voice of Spider-Man again who also played the character in the first game. Unfortunately that’s where the nostalgia ends.
I have been a fan of past Spider-Man games including the first Amazing Spider-Man game but to me it felt that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game didn’t really live up to the original title and lacked a lot of content. Sure there were unlimited side missions available, but the game was incredibly short compared to the original. Despite the cool villains and great audio by Sam Riegel there was absolutely nothing here to garner any form of satisfaction. I had high hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game but was sadly disappointed and wouldn’t really recommend picking this game up unless it is cheap or you are a die-hard Spider-Man fan, even then you may still feel somewhat disappointed.
